Composite or ceramic veneers?

Composite or ceramic veneers?

If you want to beautify your smile with facets, you need to know the following. Veneers are prosthetic restorations that are placed on the front surface of the upper and lower teeth. They can be made of ceramic or composite materials. The role of both types of veneers is to contribute to the aesthetics of the dentition. With them, we can change the color, shape, size of the teeth; close the gaps between the teeth. Sometimes it is necessary to pre-sand the teeth before making veneers, depending on the indication for making veneers. Although they have the same role, the differences between them certainly exist.

Composite veneers are made in one visit to the dentist, when a composite material is placed directly on the tooth surface, which is shaped, polymerized, processed and polished. The biggest drawback of composite veneers is their durability. Over time, the color of the material and its porosity change, which can impair the aesthetics.

When it comes to ceramic veneers, we need more visits to make them. First we will do detailed planning; the laboratory will model a new shape of your future teeth (wax up) based on which we will test a plastic model of veneers (mock up) in the office. If you are satisfied with your new smile, we start preparing by minimally sanding your teeth. In the next visit, the veneers are ready for cementation. The advantages of ceramic veneers are better aesthetic properties of ceramic materials, durability, and there is no change in the color of the veneers.

When do you need a crown?

When the tooth is damaged to such an extent that it is impossible to repair it conservatively with a composite filling or inlay, onlay, the crown is made. Causes of tooth damage can be caries, tooth fractures, atria, and abrasion. Sometimes crowns are a solution for the developmental irregularities of the teeth. In the case of teeth that have been endodontically treated, it is sometimes necessary to make reinforcement in the form of cast or fiberglass pegs before the crown is made, due to the lack of dental substance. Crowns serve to compensate for lost tooth tissue, to restore the tooth’s function, but also for aesthetic reasons. They can be metal-ceramic, ceramic, zirconium ceramic crowns.

When making a crown, it is necessary to sand the tooth, in order to provide space for the material. Based on the impression taken after sanding, the dental technicians in the laboratory make a crown, which we later try, adjust and fix with tooth cement. By placing the crown, the tooth is strengthened, its resistance to chewing forces is restored, and its further damage is prevented.

Everything you are interested in about dental implants

Dental implants represent the greatest technological advancement in dentistry. They are made of titanium alloy, a completely bio inert and biocompatible material that is built into the jawbone and has the ability to grow together with the bone, that is. to osseointegrate.  Their appearance resembles a screw to most patients.

Implant placement is indicated when you are missing only one or more teeth. If you are missing only one tooth, an implant is an ideal solution, because it does not require grinding/sanding the adjacent healthy teeth. The implantation takes a very short time, under local anesthesia, and patients often say that it is more painless than removing the tartar. For patients with an expressed fear of dental interventions, implant placement can be performed in analgesia.

After 4-6 months, when the implant attaches to the bone, we can place the suprastructure (abutment) and the crown. The abutment is the connection between the implant located in the bone and the crown.

If you are missing more teeth, a metal-ceramic or metal-free (ceramic) bridge is made on the implants. Implants can also be used to fix and stabilize dentures in case of total edentulousness.

Are you worried about the possibility of implant rejection?

In the past, while implant placement was in the experimental phase and was done on the basis of a two-dimensional orthopan image, the occurrence of implant rejection was common. Today, with the possibility of detailed analysis and installation planning using 3D imaging, this phenomenon is minimized. If failure occurs, the leading cause is poor oral hygiene.

Good oral hygiene as well as regular check-ups allow for implant longevity.

When is it not possible to place implants?

In certain health conditions and diseases such as uncontrolled diabetes, serious heart disease, oncological diseases, there is a contraindication for implant placement, until the general health condition of the patient is under control. Age is not an obstacle for implant placement, except when it comes to children with incomplete growth and development of the jaws. The main obstacle is the lack of bone and its insufficient density, but thanks to the daily development of dentistry, today there are interventions that in certain cases can compensate for the lost bone and provide the conditions for implant placement.
